Adding Cloud Object Storage to Veeam Backup & Replication¶
Cloud4You Object Storage (OCS) provides an interface compatible with the Amazon S3 API and can be added to Veeam Backup & Replication as an S3 Compatible repository.
Before starting the configuration, prepare:
- Access Key ID,
- Secret Access Key,
- S3 endpoint address,
- the name of a bucket created earlier.
Default Cloud4You OCS parameters:
If you received a different endpoint during service activation, use the address provided by Cloud4You.
Selecting the repository type in Veeam¶
When adding a repository, Veeam offers, among other things, two options related to S3-compatible storage:
S3 Compatible¶
This is the standard and recommended choice for Cloud4You Object Storage.
A repository of this type can be used, among other things, as:
- a target backup repository,
- a repository for Backup Copy Job,
- an object storage tier used by Scale-Out Backup Repository.
For a typical Cloud4You OCS configuration, select:
S3 Compatible with Data Archiving¶
This repository type is intended for object storage that provides an archive tier supported by the Veeam Smart Object Storage API (SOSAPI).
An S3 Compatible with Data Archiving repository can only be used as an Archive Tier in a Scale-Out Backup Repository.
Do not select this option for standard backup storage in Cloud4You OCS unless Cloud4You has informed you during service activation that SOSAPI-compatible archiving is available for your storage space.
Creating a bucket¶
Before adding the repository to Veeam, create the bucket manually.
A bucket can be created in several ways.
Create a bucket in OCS Browser
Create a bucket using the S3 API
Example bucket name:
The bucket name should be unique and preferably contain only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens.
Do not enable automatic bucket creation in Veeam
For Cloud4You OCS, we do not recommend enabling Multiple Buckets mode, in which Veeam automatically creates additional child buckets.
Veeam may create additional buckets as the number of stored backup chains grows. With a larger number of repositories or customers, this can quickly exhaust the bucket limit available to the account.
Reaching the limit may prevent Veeam from creating another bucket and, as a result, cause backup failures.
Create the bucket in advance and select it manually during repository configuration.
Adding an S3 repository in Veeam¶
In the Veeam Backup & Replication console, go to:
Right-click Backup Repositories and select:
You can also use the Add Repository button on the top toolbar.
Then select:
Repository name¶
In the Name field, enter a clear repository name, for example:
or:
The Description field is optional. You can use it to enter additional information such as the customer name, location, or repository purpose.
Connection configuration¶
In the Account step, enter the Cloud4You OCS access parameters.
Service point¶
For Service point, enter:
This is the default and recommended Cloud4You OCS endpoint.
If Cloud4You provided you with a different endpoint, for example one assigned to a specific location, use the address supplied during service activation.
Region¶
In the Region field, enter:
Credentials¶
In the Credentials field, select existing credentials or click Add and enter:
These are the Cloud4You Object Storage credentials provided during service activation.
Credential security
Treat the Secret Access Key like a password. Do not store it in documentation, support tickets, or other locations accessible to unauthorized persons.
Connection mode¶
Veeam allows you to choose how it communicates with the object storage repository.
The most commonly used mode is:
In this mode, data is transferred directly to Object Storage.
If the infrastructure requires a specific intermediate server, you can select:
and specify the appropriate Gateway server.
If you have not received any other network configuration recommendations, keep the standard connection mode.
Selecting the bucket¶
After successfully connecting to Cloud4You OCS, proceed to bucket selection.
In the Bucket field, select the bucket created earlier, for example:
Then select or create the folder in which Veeam will store repository data.
Example:
Veeam will create its own data and metadata structure in the selected location as required to operate the repository.
Do not modify Veeam data directly in the bucket
Once the repository is in use, its contents should be managed by Veeam Backup & Replication.
Do not manually delete objects, folders, or files that belong to the Veeam repository. Also do not configure Lifecycle rules that automatically delete or move objects stored by Veeam. Doing so may corrupt the backup chain or cause restore problems.
Completing the configuration¶
Proceed through the remaining wizard steps and confirm the configuration with Apply or Finish, depending on the Veeam Backup & Replication version in use.
After completion, the repository should appear under:
From that point, it can be selected as a target for supported Veeam backup jobs or used in a Scale-Out Backup Repository configuration.
Recommended Cloud4You OCS configuration¶
For a standard backup repository, the configuration should look as follows:
Repository type: S3 Compatible
Service point: https://s3.cloud4you.pl
Region: eu-pl-1
Credentials: Access Key ID + Secret Access Key
Bucket: created earlier using OCS Browser, AWS CLI, or API
Multiple Buckets: disabled
