FAQ

Below you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Cloud4You Veeam Cloud Connect service.

Is a VPN required to use Veeam Cloud Connect?

No.

Veeam Cloud Connect allows a Veeam Backup & Replication environment to connect to Cloud4You infrastructure over the Internet through a Cloud Gateway.

By default, the Veeam tenant communicates with the Cloud Gateway over:

TCP 6180

There is no need to establish a separate VPN tunnel just to use the Cloud Repository.

Before configuration, you can test service availability:

Test-NetConnection <Cloud-Gateway-address> -Port 6180

A correct result is:

TcpTestSucceeded : True

What information is required to start the service?

For configuration, you need the information received from Cloud4You:

  • Cloud Gateway address,
  • username,
  • password,
  • allocated storage information,
  • optionally a non-standard port, if specified.

Then add Cloud4You in Veeam as a:

Service Provider

Guide:

Service Access

Where do I add Cloud4You in Veeam?

In the console, go to:

Backup Infrastructure
└── Service Providers

and select:

Add Service Provider

After a successful connection, Veeam will automatically retrieve information about resources assigned to your account.

Do I need to add the Cloud Repository manually?

No.

The Cloud Repository is configured on the Cloud4You side and assigned to the customer account.

After connecting to the Service Provider, Veeam automatically retrieves information about available repositories and allocated quota.

The repository should be visible under:

Backup Infrastructure
└── Backup Repositories

More information:

Cloud Repository

What does quota mean?

Quota is the maximum capacity allocated to your account in the Cloud Repository.

Example:

Quota: 20 TB
Used: 14 TB
Free: 6 TB

If you need more space, contact Cloud4You Support.

What happens when the Cloud Repository becomes full?

If there is no free space left, subsequent operations that require writing new data may fail.

In that situation:

  1. check the retention policy,
  2. check GFS,
  3. review old backups,
  4. estimate the required space,
  5. increase the quota if necessary.

Danger

Do not manually delete backup files directly from the repository. Backups should be managed using Veeam Backup & Replication mechanisms.

More information:

Retention

Can I increase Cloud Repository capacity?

Yes.

Quota is assigned on the Cloud4You side and can be changed according to the service scope.

After the capacity is changed, perform:

Backup Infrastructure
→ Service Providers
→ Cloud4You
→ Rescan

or:

Backup Infrastructure
→ Backup Repositories
→ Cloud Repository
→ Rescan

to refresh information in the console.

Can I back up directly to the Cloud Repository?

Yes, for scenarios supported by Veeam Cloud Connect.

The Cloud Repository can be used by supported Veeam jobs, including as a target for a Backup Copy Job.

A typical Cloud4You scenario:

Local backup
        ↓
Backup Copy Job
        ↓
Cloud4You Cloud Repository

More information:

Backup Copy Job

Can the Cloud Repository be the source of a Backup Copy Job?

No.

Veeam supports Backup Copy Jobs directed to the Cloud Repository, but the Cloud Repository cannot be used as the source of a Backup Copy Job.

If you need another protection or archive layer, contact Cloud4You to select an appropriate solution.

Does the first Backup Copy Job take longer?

Yes, usually significantly longer.

During the first run, the initial copy of the data must be created in the Cloud Repository.

The first transfer duration depends on:

  • amount of data,
  • connection bandwidth,
  • local repository performance,
  • Veeam server performance,
  • number of parallel jobs.

Subsequent sessions usually transfer only the data required to create the next restore points.

Can I restrict the hours during which data is transferred?

Yes.

Depending on the Backup Copy Job mode, you can configure a schedule or time windows during which transfer should not take place.

Example:

08:00–16:00 transfer disabled
16:00–08:00 transfer allowed

This can be useful if backup traffic should not consume bandwidth during working hours.

Immediate Copy or Periodic Copy — which should I choose?

Immediate Copy

Choose this if a new restore point should be copied to the Cloud Repository as soon as possible after the local backup is created.

Local backup
      ↓
new restore point
      ↓
automatic copy to Cloud4You

Periodic Copy

Choose this if copying should occur according to a fixed schedule.

Example:

Local backup: 22:00
Backup Copy: 02:00

Details:

Backup Copy Job

Can cloud retention be different from local retention?

Yes.

A Backup Copy Job has its own retention policy.

Example:

Local backup:
14 days

Cloud Repository:
30 days

Changing local backup retention does not automatically change Backup Copy Job retention.

More information:

Retention

Does Veeam Cloud Connect support GFS?

Yes.

For a Backup Copy Job, you can configure a long-term GFS policy.

Available options include:

Weekly
Monthly
Yearly

Example:

Short-Term → 30 days
Weekly → 4 weeks
Monthly → 12 months
Yearly → 5 years

Remember that GFS increases Cloud Repository capacity requirements.

Can backups be encrypted?

Yes.

Veeam Backup & Replication can encrypt backups stored in the Cloud Repository.

For business-critical data, we recommend using encryption.

Encryption password

Store the password or other data required to decrypt the backup in a secure location. Losing the encryption credentials may make future backup recovery impossible.

Does Cloud4You know my backup encryption password?

The backup encryption password should not be provided in a standard support request or stored in documentation.

The encryption password should remain under the customer's control and be stored in a secure secrets management system.

When configuring the Service Provider, Veeam may provide separate options related to the Service Provider's permissions for restore operations. Configure such permissions deliberately.

Can I restore an individual file from the Cloud Repository?

Yes — for supported scenarios.

For virtual machine backups stored in the Cloud Repository, Veeam Cloud Connect supports Guest OS File Restore for Microsoft Windows.

Typical path:

Home
↓
Backups
↓
Cloud
↓
select VM
↓
Restore guest files
↓
Microsoft Windows

You can then use:

Copy To

or:

Restore

Guide:

File Restore

Can I restore Linux files from a VM backup in the Cloud Repository?

Standard Multi-OS Guest File Restore directly from a VM backup stored in the Cloud Repository is not supported by Veeam Cloud Connect.

For specific scenarios or other backup types, verify the appropriate recovery method.

If you are not sure, contact Cloud4You Support.

Can I restore an entire machine?

Yes.

Veeam supports Entire VM Restore from the Cloud Repository.

You can restore a machine:

  • to the original location,
  • to a new location,
  • from a selected restore point.

Guide:

VM Restore

Can I restore a machine to another host or storage?

Yes — if the Veeam scenario and infrastructure in use support it.

During Entire VM Restore, select:

Restore to a new location,
or with different settings

You can then specify, among other things:

  • host or cluster,
  • datastore / storage,
  • VM name,
  • network mapping.

This is also a good option for test restores.

Can I perform application-level restore?

Yes, for supported applications and correctly created backups.

Veeam Explorers may allow application-item recovery from backups stored in the Cloud Repository.

Veeam documents support for, among other things:

  • Microsoft Active Directory,
  • Microsoft Exchange,
  • Microsoft SharePoint,
  • Microsoft SQL Server,
  • Microsoft OneDrive for Business,
  • Microsoft Teams,
  • Oracle,
  • PostgreSQL.

Availability of a specific operation depends on the backup type and application processing settings.

Can I perform a test restore without affecting production?

Yes.

With Entire VM Restore, you can restore a machine to a new location and place it in an isolated network.

Example:

Cloud Repository
        ↓
Restore
        ↓
VM-TEST-RESTORE
        ↓
Isolated VLAN

This is the recommended way to periodically verify full-machine recovery.

How often should restore tests be performed?

Frequency should follow the organization's requirements, RTO, RPO, and the importance of the data.

For critical systems, it is worth performing tests regularly rather than waiting for an actual failure.

At a minimum, periodically verify:

  • individual file restore,
  • restore point availability,
  • operation of the complete recovery process for the most important systems.

Important

A backup job status of Success does not replace restore testing.

Does Veeam Community Edition support Cloud Connect?

Not for creating jobs directed to Cloud Connect resources.

Veeam Backup & Replication on the customer side must have a paid license to create backups and replications directed to Service Provider resources.

Veeam does, however, document the ability to perform data recovery operations from the cloud in this context.

If the Cloud Repository is visible but you cannot create a job, check the license in use.

Does my Veeam version have to be identical to the version used by Cloud4You?

It does not have to be exactly the same, but it must comply with Cloud Connect version compatibility rules.

For major versions, the rule is:

Service Provider
same or newer major version
than tenant

Example:

Cloud4You: Veeam 13
Customer: Veeam 12
           ✓

Whereas:

Cloud4You: Veeam 12
Customer: Veeam 13
           ✗

is not a valid Cloud Connect arrangement.

Before moving to a new major version, contact Cloud4You.

Where can I get an image for a Veeam update?

Cloud4You provides customers with the appropriate Veeam installation images.

If you are planning an update:

  1. check the current version and build,
  2. contact Cloud4You,
  3. obtain information about the supported version,
  4. download the provided image,
  5. perform the update according to the guide.

More information:

Veeam Updates

What should I do after changing the Cloud Connect password?

After changing the password, update the credentials stored in Veeam.

Go to:

Backup Infrastructure
└── Service Providers
└── Cloud4You
└── Properties

Update the login details, finish the wizard, and perform:

Rescan

What should I do if the Cloud Repository disappears?

First perform:

Backup Infrastructure
→ Service Providers
→ Cloud4You
→ Rescan

If the repository is still not visible:

  • check connectivity to the Cloud Gateway,
  • check credentials,
  • verify the account,
  • contact Cloud4You to verify assigned resources.

What should I do if a Backup Copy Job has Failed status?

First open the session details:

Home
└── Last 24 Hours

Check the full error message.

Then verify:

Cloud Gateway
↓
Service Provider
↓
Cloud Repository
↓
Quota
↓
Source backup
↓
Backup Copy Job

Guide:

Common Errors

How do I check whether the Cloud Gateway is reachable?

In PowerShell:

Test-NetConnection <Cloud-Gateway-address> -Port 6180

If:

TcpTestSucceeded : True

the TCP connection to the default Cloud Gateway port is possible.

If the result is:

False

check the firewall, routing, DNS, and network configuration.

What information should I prepare for a support request?

Prepare at least:

  • Veeam version,
  • build number,
  • job name,
  • date and time of the error,
  • full error message,
  • Test-NetConnection result,
  • Rescan result,
  • Cloud Repository name,
  • quota information,
  • Veeam logs, if required.

Ready-to-use support request template:

Information to Include in a Support Request

Where are Veeam logs located?

The main Veeam Backup & Replication logs in Windows are stored by default in:

C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup

For support requests, however, we recommend using the built-in log export:

Main Menu
→ Help
→ Support Information

This allows Veeam to prepare an archive containing the appropriate diagnostic information.

Can Cloud4You increase retention without increasing quota?

Retention is configured on the Veeam job side, while the amount of available space is limited by the Cloud Repository quota.

Technically, you can configure longer retention, but if it requires more capacity than the available quota, the job may eventually run out of space for new data.

Before significantly increasing retention, we recommend estimating the required capacity.

Capacity Calculator

Does longer retention use more space?

Usually yes.

Cloud Repository usage is affected by:

  • source data size,
  • daily data change,
  • retention length,
  • GFS,
  • backup frequency,
  • number of protected machines.

Therefore, retention should be selected together with appropriate service capacity.

Does a backup in the Cloud Repository replace a local backup?

It should not be treated as an automatic replacement for the entire backup strategy.

A typical model uses several layers:

Production
   ↓
Local backup
   ↓
Backup Copy
   ↓
Cloud4You Cloud Repository

Depending on organizational requirements, additional layers can also be used, such as tape archiving.

The goal is to reduce the risk of losing all copies as a result of a single failure or incident.

Does Cloud Connect satisfy the 3-2-1 rule?

The Cloud Repository can be one element of a 3-2-1 strategy because it allows an additional copy to be stored outside the local infrastructure.

However, the presence of a Cloud Repository alone does not automatically mean that the entire environment satisfies the 3-2-1 rule.

All existing copies, media, and locations must be considered.

Still have a problem?

If you did not find the answer:

  1. go to Common Errors,
  2. perform basic troubleshooting,
  3. prepare the information according to Information to Include in a Support Request,
  4. contact Cloud4You Support.
