Changing the PHP Version in cPanel¶
In cPanel, you can change the PHP version used by your website.
This may be necessary, for example, when:
- the application requires a newer PHP version,
- the old PHP version is no longer supported,
- errors appear after updating WordPress, Joomla, or another system,
- a developer asks you to change the PHP version.
1. Log in to cPanel¶
Log in to your cPanel account.
Then find the section:
Software
and click:
MultiPHP Manager
2. Select a domain¶
You will see a list of domains assigned to your hosting account.
Select the domain for which you want to change the PHP version.
Example:
If you have several domains, make sure you select the correct one.
3. Select the PHP version¶
After selecting the domain, find the:
PHP Version
list or a similar option for selecting the PHP version.
Choose the appropriate version, for example:
or:
Then click:
Apply
After a moment, the new PHP version will be assigned to the selected domain.
4. Check the website¶
After changing the PHP version, open your website and verify that it works correctly.
In particular, check:
- the home page,
- login to the administration panel,
- forms,
- the online store,
- other important website features.
If everything works correctly, the change has been applied successfully.
5. What to do if the website stops working¶
If, after changing the PHP version, the website shows an error, a blank page, or stops working:
- return to MultiPHP Manager,
- select the same domain,
- choose the previous PHP version,
- click Apply.
Example:
In this situation, temporarily switch back to:
and check the website again.
6. Do not choose a PHP version at random¶
A newer PHP version does not always mean that an older application will work with it.
Older:
- websites,
- plugins,
- themes,
- libraries,
- custom PHP applications
may not be compatible with a newer PHP version.
Before changing the version, make sure that the system you use supports the selected PHP version.
7. PHP version can be set separately for each domain¶
If you have several domains on one hosting account, each of them can use a different PHP version.
Example:
This means you do not have to change the PHP version for all websites at the same time.
8. Simplest procedure¶
To change the PHP version:
- Log in to cPanel.
- Go to:
Software → MultiPHP Manager
- Select the domain.
- Select the PHP version.
- Click Apply.
- Check whether the website works.
Done.
If you are not sure which PHP version to choose, do not change it at random. Contact your website administrator or Cloud4You technical support.
